Vascular surgery is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases.
Blood vessels are essentially the pathways of the circulatory system. Without smooth blood circulation, the body would not be able to function properly. Pathological conditions such as arterial occlusion or venous thrombosis can cause circulatory dysfunction either by blocking blood flow to various parts of the body or by transporting clots from one area to another. In vascular surgery, all modern diagnostic methods are used, such as angiographies, CT scans, and MRI.
The use of ultrasound and the performance of tests such as Doppler and Triplex of vessels represent the most common and useful examinations in the vascular surgeon’s toolkit. Vascular diseases are treated either with classic (open) vascular surgical operations or with the most modern endovascular methods.
In recent years, endovascular and minimally invasive surgical techniques have shown rapid development, offering patients even more therapeutic options. A well-trained vascular surgeon must fully inform their patients and be able to offer all available therapeutic options.
However, there are also many cases where vascular diseases do not require any surgical intervention. Many vascular problems can be treated with medication, strict monitoring and control of risk factors, regular exercise, and medical follow-up.
